Abstract

A detergent composition comprises the reaction product of a 1,2 or 1,3 or 1,4 or 1,5 C8- 22 saturated straight chain aliphatic diol or a mixture of two or more such compounds with at least 3 mols. ethylene oxide. The term diol includes compounds having an ether linkage, e.g. dodecyl glyceryl ether. The compounds are used in aqueous solution either alone or in the presence of detergent builder salts such as alkali-metal sulphates, carbonates, silicates, phosphates or borates. The composition may also include carboxymethylcellulose, synthetic detergents, soaps, perfumes, abrasives, foam stabilizers, germicidal agents and colouring agents. The diol may be obtained by the oxidation of olefines, the hydrolysis of chlorohydrins, the pinacol reduction of ketones or the hydrolysis of 1,2 epoxides. Examples use tetradecane -1,2-diol, and a C10- 20 1,2 diol mixture.
