In a hydraulically operated folding hatch cover, a hydraulic cylinder 22 is pivoted at 23 to a link member 24 pivoted at 25 to the hatch coaming, and the cylinder has a piston rod which is pivoted at 21 to an outer cover section 10A also pivoted to the hatch coaming, the arrangement being such that, during uncovering of the hatch, the piston rod first moves outwardly from its fully retracted position to its fully extended position and studs 33 on an inner cover section 10C enter an open ended slot 27 in the link member, and subsequently the link member 24 and the inner cover section 10C pivot about 25 while the piston rod then retracts. A catch.(28), prevents the studs 33 from leaving the slot 27 during the retraction of the piston. This catch is released by a cam (31) when the cover is fully open and a catch 28a holds the catch in its released position until, during closing of the hatch cover, a stud 28b on a cover section 10B acts to reset the catch (28). A stud 34 on cover section 10C cooperates with a reversing valve (40) in the feed system to the hydraulic cylinder to effect the required reversal of the piston movement when the hatch is half covered. A further catch, Figs. 10 to 12 (not shown), may be located on the outer end of one of the forks 26 on the link member. The catches may be hydraulically operated. When the hatch is fully closed, a pin 20 on the outermost cover section 10A rests in a recess 19, but in other positions, section 10A pivots on pin 18 engaging a slot 17 in a vertical plate (16).
