The shut-off valve 22 of a prepayment gas meter with spaced inlet and outlet is within a gas-tight valve box 18 located inside the meter casing proper and immediately below the inlet 14 or outlet 16, one side of the valve communicating with the inlet or outlet, and the other side with a conduit 20 or chamber communicating with the distributing valve or valves of the meter. In the meters described, a gas-tight partition 8 separates an upper region 4 from a lower region 6 containing the measuring chambers. The valve box 18 is located between outlet 16 and region 6, as shown, or inlet 14 and region 4. The prepayment mechanism 12 may be on the side of the meter adjacent box 18, so that the valve operating spindle passes through a single stuffing box 28, or on the opposite side, the spindle passing through one stuffing box in the meter wall and one in the valve box wall. The valve box and prepayment mechanism may alternatively be secured to the front wall or top of the meter casing.
