In a yarn sizing machine, the pressure between a pair of squeeze rollers between which the yarn passes is automatically controlled dependent upon yarn speed, such that an increase in yarn speed produces an increase in pressure and a decrease in yarn speed produces a decrease in pressure such that the amount of size applied is substantially constant. The control mechanism includes a motor arranged to be energised when sizing conditions vary, e.g. by an indication from suitably positioned hygrometers. The control is such that the position of an immersion roller in a size trough is automatically adjusted synchronously with an adjustment of the position of the upper squeeze roller. The motor oscillates a shaft 22 and thus a link 24, which via a rod 36, rocker arm 37 and link 38 moves the roller 13 to increase or decrease pressure. The link 24 also moves a rocker plate 27 via a lug 25 engaging an arcuate slot 26 in the plate 27; movement of the rocker plate 27 operates through a link 29 and rod 30 to raise or lower the immersion roller 10. The rod (30) is provided with a rack (50) associated with an epicyclic gear (43), Fig. 2 (not shown), such that upon movement of the rollers (10), (13), the planet carrier (47) is rotated causing a change in speed of the driven feed roller (11), the tension in the yarn thus remaining substantially constant. Mechanism is provided enabling the roller 13 and an upper feed roller 11 to be moved clear to facilitate threading of the yarn.
