Abstract

1,094,662. Metal clad switchgear structures. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. July 15, 1966 [July 26, 1965], No. 31811/66. Heading H2B. A metal-clad compressed gas (SF 6 ) insulated switchgear includes an isolating switch unit 13 comprising a metal casing 24; two fixed conductors 25, 26 and a switch blade 31 for connecting them together; and disc-shaped insulators 62 at each end of the casing 24 to support the conductors 25, 26 which are connected to busbars 14<SP>1</SP> located in compressed gas filled casings 15<SP>1</SP>, the insulators 62 also serving as gas barriers between the housings. Each conductor 25, 26 carries a hollow voltage grading electrode 27, 28 which respectively house the movable contact blade 31 and a fixed contact 32. Blade 31 is driven by a motor (50) through an insulating shaft (47, 48) (Figs. 1, 2, not shown) and a rack and pinion 39, 38. The casing 24 also carries earthing contact blades 55, 58 and has an observation window (81) (Fig. 1, not shown). The switchgear includes bus conductors (14) in compressed-gas-filled casings (15) and supported by disc insulators (23). Modified isolating switches (11) (Fig. 2, not shown) in which the fixed contact is mounted on a bushing (77) serve to connect the bus conductors to gasblast circuit breakers (12). The isolating switch casings 24 are given shaped ends 76 and the bus conductors are connected together by flexible conductors (75) to allow for expansion. In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown) auxiliary snap-acting contacts (87-89) are provided.
