Abstract

1,094,621. Automatic size control. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 5, 1965 [March 18, 1964], No. 11429/64. Heading G3R. [Also in Division G1] In a granulation process in which granulated material is classified into different size fractions, the quantity of material in a measuring device containing one size fraction is compared with a reference quantity and any change in the relationship between the two quantities is automatically corrected by control of the granulation conditions. As applied to the granulation of calcium sulphate, calcium sulphate hemi-hydrate and a spray of water are supplied to an inclined granulation dish rotated by an electric motor, and the resulting granules allowed to fall through a transverse air stream so that they are deflected to an extent dependent on their size into five hoppers which thus receive granules in different size categories. The granules in two of the hoppers are each passed through an inspection chamber one granule deep to intercept X-rays influencing ionization chambers so as to measure granule-mass. If the difference between the two measurements exceeds a predetermined value it is effective through a reversible servomotor to adjust the angle of tilt of the granulation dish in the appropriate sense so that granulation time and hence growth is varied to equalize masses in the two hoppers. A thin plastic tape moves between the inspection chamber and the X-ray source and between the inspection chamber and the ionization chamber to remove dust and moisture and prevent fouling. The ionization chambers have aluminium windows and are filled with krypton. The Specification also refers to:- (a) separation by hot gases which also effect drying. (b) intermittent sampling of granule mass. (c) controlling rate of feed to or rate of rotation of the granulator and/or the position of the liquid spray. (d) control in dependence on a comparison between one size category and a reference instead of between two size categories. (e) application to blunger, drum or compaction granulation or prilling from a solution, melt or slurry. (f) application to fertilisers, cement, carbon black, metal or plastic.
