Abstract
Phosphonic acid mixed esters of formula <FORM:1094435/C4-C5/1> where R is C1- 18 hydrocarbyl, R1 is C1- 3 alkyl, and R11 is C4-18 alkyl, C7-18 aralkyl or C3-18 alkenyl (for preparation, see Division C2) are stated to be useful as hydraulic oils and motor fuel additives.ALSO:Phosphonic acid mixed esters of formula <FORM:1094435/C2/1> where R is C1- 18 hydrocarbyl, R1 is C1- 3 alkyl, and R11 is C4- 18 alkyl, C7- 18 aralkyl or C3- 18 alkenyl are prepared by heating a phosphonic ester RP(O)(OR1)2 with approximately equimolar amounts of R11X, where X is Cl, Br or I, in the presence of an alkali metal, alkaline metal, ammonium or organic-substituted ammonium salt of a hydrohalic acid or of a partially esterified phosphonic acid of formula RP(O)(OR)(OH). Examples prepare the methyl butyl, methyl isoamyl, methyl dodecyl, methyl allyl, methyl crotyl, and methyl benzyl esters of methylphosphonic acid, the ethyl butyl, and isopropyl dodecyl esters of ethylphosphonic acid, methyl butyl dodecylphosphonate, methyl butyl phenylphosphonate and methyl butyl 2-phenylethenylphosphonate.
