1457535 Preparing alkyl phosphonic acid ester salts HOECHST AG 19 Nov 1973 [20 Nov 1972] 53649/73 Heading C2P [Also in Divisions D1 and C5] Compounds of Formula I where R<SP>1</SP> represents n- or secondary alkyl (6-22C), R<SP>2</SP> represents alkyl (1-4C) and X represents a monovalent metal ion, one equivalent of Mg, Ca, Sr or Ba ion or ammonium, may be prepared by saponification of alkane phosphonic acid dialkyl diesters, e.g. with sodium or potassium hydroxide. Examples relate to the preparation of (1) sodium-methyln-octan phosphonate, (2) potassium-methyl-noctadecan phosphonate, (3a) the monoethyl ester-potassium salt of a phosphonic acid derived from a C 11 -C 13 olefin having a non- terminal double bond, (3b) sodium-ethyl-nhexadecan phosphonate, and (4) the product of refluxing diisobutyl-n-hexadecan phosphonate with potassium hydroxide. The alkane phosphonic acid dialkyl esters used as starting materials may be prepared by the radicalinitiated addition of dialkyl phosphites to long-chain olefins, e.g. according to German Offenlegungsschrift 1,963,014.
