Abstract

1,094,423. Irradiation apparatus. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. July 26, 1966 [July 30, 1965], No. 33628/66. Heading H5R. An apparatus for the irradiation of samples comprises a block of radiation absorbing material acting as a biological shield, a chamber formed in the block, a removable container for samples to be irradiated which can be inserted into the chamber and a number of removable radiation sources disposed in rectilinear channels formed in the biological shield said channels extending into the chamber and being distributed at equiangular intervals round an axis of the chamber wherein the channels are arranged so as to generate a hyperboloid of one surface whose axis is the same as that of the chamber and whose narrowed portion occurs opposite the container. Fig. 3 shows an embodiment of the apparatus. It comprises three parts 22, 18 and 20 held in correct relationship by frame 44 which also carries the manipulating means for the removable container. The main section 18 contains the chamber 6 and comprises a radiation absorbent material 8 contained in a sheet metal jacket 26. Around the chamber are arranged ten source channels 12, only one on which is shown for the sake of clarity. The radiation source preferably comprises two active sections, e.g. Co 60 separated by an inactive section, e.g. Al, and in use the source is positioned in channel 12 so that the inactive section is placed directly opposite the sample container. The sample carrying container is formed by a plunger 36 having a central compartment flanked by two protective sections of radiation absorbent material. The container is inserted into and removed from the chamber by means of rack 46 and pinion 48 operated by motor 50. Winch 54 carrying counterweight 52 reduces the force which has to be used. Section 22 of the apparatus provides shielding at the top for the plugs of source channels 12 and is also equipped with pivoted doors 41 and 42 to provide access to the samples when plug 36 is raised. Section 20 is merely a base on which the chamber stands. The biological shielding is supplied with cooling conduit 34, and conduits 28 and 30 provide an air circulation conduit equipped with filter 32 for discharge to atmosphere, so as to prevent an accumulation of ozone in the irradiation chamber.
