Abstract

1,092,768. Irradiation apparatus. ATOMIC ENERGY OF CANADA Ltd. Dec. 17, 1965 [Dec. 17, 1964], No. 53705/65. Heading H5R, Material B is irradiated by supporting an irradiation source 1 for movement along a first axis and supporting the material B so that it is distributed along at least one second axis AA<SP>1</SP> then rotating material B about its second axis and axially moving source 1. One movement of source 1 may be controlled according to the desired irradiation, e.g. using a dosage counter placed adjacent to material B. The source 1 may be raised by a hoist which can also simultaneously lift shielding plug 4 and effect relative movement between the source and plug via cables 70 and 67. The source 1 and plug 4 rise in guide tube 60. The material B can be supported on turntables 53, 54 which are rotatable about shafts 55, 56 using motor 58 acting through a chain drive (not shown). When not in use, the source 1 is kept in biological shield 2 having gas ducts 24, 25 for a cooling gas. The irradiation apparatus may be used in a biologically shielded room (see Fig. 2, not shown), the cables passing to a control (101) via a meandering tube (102).
