Abstract

1,206,151. Irradiation apparatus. SAINTGOBAIN TECHNIQUES NOUVELLES. 11 Sept., 1967 [9 Sept., 1966], No. 41335/67. Heading H5R. An irradiation apparatus comprises a radioactive source consisting of two independent cylindrical radio-active elements associated co-axially in end to end relationship one on each side of a horizontal plane of symmetry of an irradiation zone, a horizontal platform on which rows of articles to be irradiated can be arranged around the source and means for moving the rows successively along different linear paths in turn so that each article makes at least one complete circuit around the source and successively occupies each of a number of possible positions. Preferably the source unit is that indicated generally as 21 in Fig. 4 and each of the source elements 22 and 24 is provided with a positioning and storing mechanism comprising a source carrier e.g. 32 closely sliding in a cylindrical cavity e.g. 30 in a substantially hemispherical shield 28, each source carrier being rotatable about a horizontal axis e.g. 38 within the cavity, the source being brought into an irradiation position, as exemplified by source 22, or shielded, as exemplified by source 24, by rotating the source carrier about its cylindrical axis. The rotation of these carriers may be remotely controlled from outside by means of pulleys and flexible cables (Fig. 5, not shown). Preferably the axis on which each of the source carriers is mounted is situated below the centre of gravity of the assembly mounted on it when the source is in the irradiating position, so that the release of a locking device enables the source to return automatically to its shielded position by the force of gravity alone without relying on external power. The articles are preferably pushed around by rams. The source and conveyer systems are contained in a conventional shielded chamber.
