Abstract

Compositions comprise macromolecular organic compounds and as antistatic agent one or more Schiff's bases of formula R1-CH=N-R2 where R1 is C2- 22 alkyl and R2 is C10- 22 alkyl. Specified macromolecular compounds are polymers of butadiene, vinyl acetate, vinyl cyclohexane, styrene, 4-phenyl-butene-1, ethylene, propylene, butene-1, pentene-1, 4-methyl pentene-1, hexene-1, 5,5-dimethyl hexene-1, octadecene-1, acrylic and methacrylic esters, acrylonitrile, vinyl chloride and vinyl carbozole; polyesters; polyvinyl acetals; polyoxymethylenes; polycarbonates; polyamides; polyurethanes; and cellulose derivatives. The Schiff's base may be derived from propionic, isobutyric, n-valeryl, capryl, lauryl or stearyl aldehyde and lauryl, palmityl or stearyl amine. The compositions may be moulded to form shaped articles. In examples isobutyric aldehyde/stearyl amine condensates are added to (1) polyethylene and (6) polyvinyl acetate; n-valeric aldehyde/stearylamine condensate is added to (2) polypropylene; propionic aldehyde/lauryl-amino condensate is added to (3) polypropylene; lauryl aldehyde/laurylamine condensate is added to (4) a butadiene/styrene copolymer; n-butyric aldehyde/laurylamine condensate is added to (5) polyethylene; and stearic aldehyde/stearyl amine condensate is added to (7) a styrene/acrylonitrile copolymer.
