Abstract
1,094,192. Couplings; electromagnetic switches. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Nov. 19, 1964 [Nov. 27, 1963; June 5, 1964], Nos. 46947/63 and 23525/64. Headings H2B and H2E. In the arrangement described in Specification 1,094,191 in which a plunger 12 is forced through an expendable sandwich 3 so that a layer 9 of soft annealed copper is forced through a polythene layer 6 into contact with a layer 8 of hard rolled copper to connect members 1 and 2, the sandwich also includes a copper or aluminium layer 4 and a polystyrene layer 5 with an aperture 7. When the device is actuated, an electronic switch 22 allows a condenser 23 to discharge throught he layers 4 and 9 and the aperture 7, and part of the layer 4 is vaporized rupturing the layer 6 and completing a current path between the members 1 and 2. A low resistance path is then established, as described in the earlier Specification, when the plunger 12, actuated electromagnetically by the discharge of a condenser 20, causes the layer 9 to be extruded into engagement with the layer 8.
