Abstract

A polymer mixture is obtained by polymerizing vinyl chloride in aqueous suspension to obtain polymer granules having a plasticizer absorbing capacity of at least 15 grams per 100 grams of polymer, removing excess monomer, adding for each 100 parts by weight of polymer (a) 3-8 parts of (meth)acrylonitrile or a (meth)-acrylate of a C1-C4 alcohol; (b) 10-20 parts of a vinyl ester of a C12 + fatty acid or an acrylate, fumarate, maleate, or itaconate of a C6-C18 alcohol and (c) 2-5 parts of a diolefin and polymerizing with a monomer soluble catalyst. The vinyl chloride is preferably polymerized using as dispersing agent (i) a copolymer of vinyl pyrrolidone and an acrylate of a C6 + alcohol; (ii) polyvinylalcohol mixed with a polyoxyalkylene glycol-polyamine condensate; (iii) partially esterified styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer; or (iv) partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate with a low degree of hydrolysis. Catalyst in each stage may be lauroyl peroxide, acetyl-cyclohexylsulphonyl peroxide or diisopropylperoxidicarbonate. Monomer (a) may be ethyl acrylate or methyl or butyl methacrylate; (b) may be vinyl stearate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate or dioctyl fumarate; and (c) may be butadiene, chloroprene or isoprene.
