Abstract

1,093,698. Burner control. P. ROMANELLI and A. ALFRED, [trading as RAM DOMESTIC PRODUCTS CO.]. Oct. 10, 1966 [Oct. 11, 1965], No. 45215/66. Heading F4T. Gas burner ignition and control apparatus comprises an ignition element 32 of silicon carbide whose electrical resistance decreases with increasing temperature, the element being situated adjacent the flared end 24 of the burner 22 which is supplied with gas through a pressure regulator 14 and an electromagnetic valve 16. Referring to Fig. 2, in operation of the burner switch 106 is closed with contacts 64 and 68 of switch 60 engaged thus energizing element 32. When the temperature of the element is high enough to ignite the gas its resistance is such that the current flowing through solenoid coil 56 is sufficient to attract plunger 46 against spring 54 and so open gas valve 16. If the gas ignites the flame will further heat element 32 lowering its resistance and allowing more current to flow through coil 56. Solenoid core 50 will then be sufficiently magnetized to attract block 76 carried by switch arm 62, breaking contacts 64, 68 and closing contacts 66, 70. Current now ceases to flow through coil 56 and passes instead through coil 58 holding the plunger 46 in the open position. Coil 58 has a high resistance so the current through element 32 is decreased. If the flame is accidentally extinguished the resistance of element 32 will increase and the current through coil 58 will decrease so that switch arm 62 is released and the ignition cycle is repeated. If the gas is not ignited when valve 16 opens heater coil 90 of switch 80 will cause bimetallic arm 84 to bend opening contacts 86, 88. The current to coil 56 will then be cut off and the plunger 46 return to close valve 16.
