[Also in Division G5] A record consists of a solid body or a thin layer of an inorganic material which is selectively reacted with a suitable gas to produce a surface able to modulate an impinging optical or particle reading beam. In a first example, a metal layer of the platinum group, preferably palladium is bombarded by electrons, positive ions or irradiated by infra-red radiation in an atmosphere of hydrogen the beam selectively heating the layer locally to a temperature at which the hydrogen is adsorbed. The recording beam, or some other beam, used at a lower intensity is used to read the record optically. Erasure is achieved by so adjusting the beam intensity that the hydrogen is expelled and positively removed by gettering means. In a second example, the layer is presaturated with hydrogen and recording is made by selective de-hydrogenation with the recording beam. In other examples, superoxides such as TiO 2 , MnO 2 are reduced to lower oxides by heating, or silver or copper layers may be selectively oxidized by bombardment with oxygen ions.
