Abstract
1351812 Data storage devices DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 3 May 1972 [10 May 1971] 13989/71 Heading G4C Information is stored in the form of colour centres in which single or double electrons are trapped (F or F<SP>1</SP> centres), the concentration of the F or F<SP>1</SP> centres is changed by irradiation with F or F<SP>1</SP> band light while an electric field is applied to the storage material, and the information stored is read out by detecting the amount of F-band light absorbed by the storage material. The presence of the electric field enhances the F to F<SP>1</SP> photochemical conversion process at low temperatures, e.g. 77‹ K. In one embodiment the storage material is a KCl crystal which has been heat treated with potassium vapour to form F centres. An F-band argon laser beam is deflected on to a desired part of the crystal while an electric field is applied to cause conversion of F centres to F<SP>1</SP> centres. Read-out is performed with the same laser beam but without the electric field so that low absorption of F-band light is detected at areas containing a high concentration of F<SP>1</SP> centres. Information is erased by an F<SP>1</SP>-band He/Ne laser beam which causes the conversion of F<SP>1</SP> centres to F centres. Alternatively, the F<SP>1</SP>-band light may be used to write information while the F- band light, in conjunction with the electric field is used to erase information.
