1,093,260. Sorting records. TELEFUNKEN, PATENTVERWERTUNGS G.m.b.H. Oct. 22, 1965 [Oct. 26, 1964], No. 44858/65. Heading G4M. In a sorting machine, documents are directed to a reject compartment if a reading or a machine error is detected, documents which do not fulfil a chosen one of several sorting criteria are directed to a special compartment, and documents which fulfil the chosen sorting criterion are sorted into the appropriate normal sorting compartments. The detectable machine errors may be the feeding of two documents together, a document sequence error resulting from a mis-sort in a previous pass and a document position error. The sorting criteria may be (a) presence of a numeric character in a selected position on which sorting is being performed, (b) presence of a significant character in the selected position, (c) presence of a desired character in the selected position when it is desired to separate a document having a selected account number from the other documents, all documents not having that number being directed to the special compartment.
