Abstract

1435394 Sorting postal mail LICENTIA PATENT-VERWALTUNGS GmbH 30 Oct 1973 [31 Oct 1972] 50415/73 Heading B8A In a sorting installation for light mail, items of mail are selectively passed on to a plurality of sorting channels by a plurality of sorting stations spaced along the sorting channels and the number of items of mail simultaneously passing a predetermined point of each sorting channel is determined, an output signal being produced if the number exceeds a predetermined value. The figure shows diagrammatically a sorting installation, sorting stations 11-17 feeding sorting channels 100-500 via switchpoints 111-517. Data processing device 60 receives address information from each sorting station, controls the operation of switchpoints 111-517 in dependence on this information, and by means of simulation determines the number of items of mail immediately before each switchpoint connected to each of the sorting stations 15-17 at any moment. By storing and adding this information, the number of items of mail passing along a section of the sorting channels between two these stations 15-17 may be determined. Alarm signals are produced if either the number of items passing any switchpoint or the number of items in a section of the sorting channels is likely to cause a blockage at processing devices 51 (in this case, continuous separators) which can only handle a limited density of items at a time.
