Abstract

<PICT:1092363/C3/1> In treating starch with ethylene oxide, the starch, slightly alkaline water and gaseous ethylene oxide are passed axially into and radially through a high-speed centrifugal mixer, Fig. 2, comprising a rotor 3 rotating at a very high speed, e.g. 3000 revolutions per minute, and a stator 4 having an axial opening 2, through which pass pipes 11, 12 and 13, which may convey the starch, alkaline water and ethylene oxide, separately, into the mixer. Alternatively a mixture of starch and alkaline water may be fed into the mixer through the pipe 12, and the ethylene oxide may be fed in through the pipe 11. The stator and rotor, respectively, are provided with a plurality of overlapping projections 5 and 6. The resulting mixture is collected in a peripheral space 9, and discharged tangentially from the mixer.
