Abstract

A microwave generator consists of a body of semi-conductor material, e.g. gallium arsenide or indium phosphide, capable of exhibiting the Gunn effect, or similar domain-transit phenomena, provided with ohmic contacts between which the resistance per unit length varies periodically. Such a periodic variation of resistance may be achieved by a periodic variation of doping along the body or by means of spaced grooves cut across it to locally reduce its cross-section. The body normally consists of an N-type layer epitaxially grown on a semiinsulating substrate and provided with evaporated tin contacts. The theory of operation of the generator is discussed.
