Abstract

a -Amino carboxylic acids are prepared by hydrolysing the corresponding hydantoin by heating under superatmospheric pressure in the presence of an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate and removing the generated gaseous materials from the reaction system during the hydrolysis while maintaining superatmospheric pressure. It is preferred to use 1-2 equivalents of alkali per mol hydantoin and to operate at 130-220 DEG C. Examples describe the preparation of alanine, a -aminoisobutyric acid, tryptophan and methionine.
