Abstract

Gelatin-containing layers are hardened by incorporating in the layers at least one polymeric chloroacylamide containing recurring interlinear groups of the general formula <FORM:1091487/C3/1> wherein R1 is H or alkyl, Z is -CO.NHR2-or -CONH- wherein R2 is a phenylene group or 1 to 6 methylene groups, Y is H, COOH, CONH2 of COOR wherein R is alkyl or hydroxy alkyl of 1 to 6 C, a phenyl or benzyl group and n is 0-5. Poly-(p-(chloroacetylamino)-methacrylanilide) is prepared by reacting methacryl chloride with p-nitroaniline, polymerizing the product in t-butanol using azoisobutyrodinitrile as catalyst, reducing the polymer with Raney Ni/hydrogen and reacting the product with chloroacetyl chloride. The polymerization may be affected in the presence of methacrylic acid to form a copolymer. The 2-chloroacetyl hydrazide of polymethacrylic acid is obtained by reacting polymethacrylic acid with thionyl chloride and reacting the product with hydrazine hydrate and then chloroacetyl chloride. Other polymers mentioned are the m-equivalent of the aforesaid polyanilide, and a polymer of the aforementioned chloroacetyl hydrazide containing hydroxy ethyl methacrylate as a comonomer component. Other comonomers may be incorporated in the polyanilides or polyhydrazides, e.g. methyl or ethyl methacrylate, acrylic acid, acrylamide and methacrylamide.
