Abstract

Fibres or fabrics comprising a mixture of a major proportion of a linear polyester and a minor proportion, of a linear polyester and a minor proportion, e.g. up to 10%, of a polymer of a nitrogen containing basic monomer are treated with an acidic reagent capable of diffusing into the fibres or fabrics. It may be (a) a mineral acid, or (b) an anhydrous acid gas corresponding to a mineral acid, or (c) an organic-carboxylic acid, or (d) a halide compound capable of liberating a hydrohalic acid on contact with water at the temperature of the acid treatment, water being present during the treatment, or (e) a compound capable of forming a complex with the nitrogen containing polymer. This polymer may be unextractable by water at a pH of 3, e.g. a vinyl pyridine polymer, a polyamide or an amine polymer. The polyester may be a linear condensation product of a dihydric alcohol and a dicarboxylic acid, such as polyethylene terephthalate or poly 1,4-cyclo-hexylenedimethylene terephthalate. The nitrogen containing polymer may be a homo polymer of monovinyl pyridene or a copolymer of monovinyl pyridene with up to 50% by weight of a copolymerisable monomer. The mineral acid used in the treatment may be hydrochloric acid, hydrobromic acid, sulphuric acid, sulphurous acid, nitric acid, phosphoric acid or perchloric acid. A source of hydrogen ions such as water in or on the polyester fibres is used in those cases where none is present in the reagent. The organic acids used in the treatment may be in the liquid or molten state or in solution in volatile organic solvent such as benzene, or in water provided that the acid is used as no less than 20% concentration. The halide reagent (d) may be a halide of phosphorus or sulphur, or of zinc, tin or aluminium. It may be an organo-sulphonyl halide. The treatment time and temperature may be 0.5 to 15 minutes at 80 DEG C to 200 DEG C when the reagent is a liquid or in solution. The treatment may be effected either before or after the yarn is drawn. The treatment renders the fibres dyeable with water-soluble, ionized dyes, comprising the large classes of acid dyes, which includes milling or strong acid dyes, direct dyes, metallized dyes and reactive dyes.
