Abstract
A tubular reactor, e.g. for catalytic steam-reforming hydrocarbons, comprises a heating chamber enclosing the tubes and incorporating at least one heat-radiating surface, at least one of the tubes having external, elongated fin means integral with the tube arranged along the line of minimum heat flux to the tube from the radiating surface. Two embodiments are described, one employing a heating chamber of rectangular horizontal cross-section, one of annular crsss-section. In both, burners are located on opposed walls (the radiating surfaces) and the tubes have pairs of opposed fins which lie along that part of the tube wall furthest from both radiating surfaces.
