Abstract

A petroleum distillate 90% of which boils above 204 DEG C. is catalytically hydrocracked with hydrogen at a partial pressure between 35 and 700 kgs/sq. cm. and a feed rate of 35.6 to 534 standard cubic metres/100 litres of distillate with liquid hourly space velocity between 0.5 and 10 volume, as liquid, of said distillate per volume of catalytic composition per hour. The temperature is between 288 DEG and 510 DEG C. The nitrogen content of the feed may be reduced before cracking. The catalytic component is prepared by compositing a Group VI or VIII metal with the calcined carrier prepared from a gelled mixture of a freshly prepared, metallicion free silica sol obtained by ion-exchange of water glass and an aqueous solution yielding aluminium cations.ALSO:A calcined carrier is prepared from a gelled mixture of freshly-prepared, metal-ion-free, silica sol obtained by ion-exchange of water-glass and an aqueous solution containing aluminium cations. Preferably the carrier is composited with metals, metal oxides or sulphides of Group VI or VIII of the Periodic Table. Physical characteristics of the carrier, viz pore and particle size, are given.
