Abstract

1,091,343. Edge-runner mills, RICHARDS STRUCTURAL STEEL CO. Ltd. Jan 19, 1966 [Feb. 2, 1965], No. 4390/65. Heading B2A. Lubrication and compressed air is supplied to an edge-runner mill of the kind having a crib, a cross-head and a mulling wheel(s) plough blade(s) whose working height is adjusted by a compressed air apparatus of the kind described in Specification 955,875 and mulling wheel pressure controlled pneumatically, as described in Specification 1,048,160. The mill is supplied with lubricant for the mulling wheels and pivot bearings and compressed air from a distributor unit comprising a head 25, Fig. 3, mounted on and rotatable with the mulling assembly 2, having an upstanding spigot 27 rotatable in a fixed sleeve 35, which is made in three segments 36-38. Lateral inlets for lubricant 43 and compressed air 46, 47 are spaced along the spigot axis and communicate with annular feed channels respectively 44 and 48, 49 in the surface of the spigot and/or in the inner wall of the sleeve. In the spigot longitudinal ducts 53 for grease and 54, 55 for air extend into the head 25 and communicate respectively with the corresponding feed channels for lubricant or air in the spigot and with ducts leading to connections for coupling delivery lines to the parts of the mulling assembly to be serviced. The two longitudinal compressed-air ducts 54, 55 deliver air to alternate sides of a pneumatic piston 18 in a cylinder 17 which controls operation of the plough. The air channels 54, 53 are supplied by lines 76, 77 from a common source through a reversing valve. The spigot also comprises a central channel 28 arranged for connection at 31 to mains water supply and to an external sprinkler, pipe (not shown) rotatable with the assembly to distribute water or other liquid to the mix.
