Abstract

1,126,656. Rolling. E. W. BLISS CO. 18 Nov., 1966 [6 Jan., 1966], No. 51739/66. Heading B3M. A rolling mill, such as a strip edg ng mill, comprising a pair of vertical rolls 20, 22 for sizing a workpiece B, includes, for each roll, a removable housing 12 which supports the roll necks in bearings 24, 26, couplings being provided between the housing and a fixed base 10 for supplying lubricant and coolant to the bearings. Each coupling includes a nipple 110 attached to the housing and a corresponding extendible nipple 130 on the base 10. When the housing is fixed in position relative to the base, the nipples 130 are raised by fluid pressure under the control of a slide valve 230, mating of the nipples automatically permitting lubricant and coolant to flow to the bearings. The lubricant is supplied from a reservoir 270 and passes through conduits 272, the corresponding nipp'es 130, further conduits 50 and 60, and to annular spaces 54 and 64 surrounding the bearings. Conduits 52, 62, and 274 return the lubricant to the reservoir. The flow of lubricant is maintained for a short period after the housing has been changed, the valve 230 then being moved to retract the nipples 130. The coolant is supplied continuously during rolling and passes from a supply to a coupling 280, through conduit 76 to chambers 70 and 72, and then through a conduit 82 to an outlet 282 or a further coupling. The couplings can be operated in each case by the supply of lubricant or coolant, the need for a separate operating fluid thus being obviated. In this latter case, fluid is pumped beneath a piston 302, Fig. 3, to raise a hollow rod 304 and an attached nipple 130. Coupling between the nipple 130 and the nipple 110 automatically unseats both a spring-loaded ball 116 and a spring-loader plunger 136 to communicate the passages 132 and 50. Uncoupling of the nipples by supplying fluid to the space above the piston 302, closes the valves in the nipples.
