Abstract

1,091,169. Electro-photographic processes. RANK XEROX Ltd. May 6, 1965 [May 15, 1964], No.19148/65. Heading G2H. A homogeneous liquid is applied to a latent electrostatic image by wiping the edge of a blade (17), Fig. 1 (not shown), across the image. The liquid which may be a developer or wetting agent has a bulk resistivity of from 5 x 10<SP>4</SP> ohm. cm to 10<SP>14</SP> ohm. cm. The blade may be of sheet metal, glass, or plastic. The blade may be connected to a source of potential (51) Fig. 3 (not shown) or to earth, Fig. 1 (not shown). A xerographic drum 20, Fig. 2, has a cleaning station 23, a charging station 25, exposure station 26, and a treatment station 27. Applicator blades 36 are rotated by a stepping motor 32 to apply a film 36 of liquid such as a wetting agent, e.g. alkylphenol polyglycol ether. The motor 32 is controlled by a photo-cell 33 which detects frame separations in the continuous length of transparencies being reproduced. The film is transferred imagewise to a transfer web 37. The colourless transferred image is then rendered visible by application of a water based ink from a roller 40. In a modification Fig. 3 (not shown) image formation and development are simultaneous.
