Abstract

Acylated mitosenes of formula <FORM:1091096/C2/1> wherein X11 is -OCH3, -NHCOR or -OCOR, R is H or C1- 4 alkyl and Z is H or CH3, are prepared by the reductive acylation with (RCO)2O or RCO hal, wherein R is H or C1- 4 alkyl and hal is halogen, of mitomycin compound I <FORM:1091096/C2/2> mitosene compound II <FORM:1091096/C2/3> mitosene compound III <FORM:1091096/C2/4> wherein X is CH3O or NH2; X1 is CH3O, NH2 or OH; Y is OH or OCH3; and Z is H or CH3. The reducing agent may be sodium hydrosulphite, zinc dust or palladium-on-carbon. The acylated mitosenes are non-toxic anti-tumour, anti-bacterial agents and may be used topically, e.g. in ointments, or orally. They may be used as disinfectants and as a preservative for raw fish (Division A2).ALSO:A preservative for raw fish consists of an acylated mitosene of formula:- <FORM:1091096/A1-A3/1> wherein X11 is -O CH3, -NH CO R or -O CO R, R is H or C1- alkyl, Z is H or CH3. The antibiotic in the form of a powder is scattered uniformly over the raw fish (Example 5).
