Abstract

The invention provides disazo water-soluble dyes of general formula <FORM:1090945/C4-C5/1> in which R is a hydrogen atom or a chlorine atom which is ortho or para to the azo linkage, R1 and R2 are methyl groups or hydrogen atoms and R3 is a radical selected from <FORM:1090945/C4-C5/2> <FORM:1090945/C4-C5/3> <FORM:1090945/C4-C5/4> which radical is ortho or para to the azo linkage. The dyes are made by coupling metanilic or chlorometanilic acids to alpha-naphthylamine, diazotizing the product and coupling to phenol, cresol or xylanol, followed by treatment with para-toluene sulphenyl chloride, or para-chlorobenzene sulphonyl chloride or benzene sulphonyl chloride. The dyes give organge shades on polyamide materials.ALSO:Water-soluble diazo dyes of formula:- <FORM:1090945/D1-D2/1> in which R is H or Cl ortho or para to the azo linkage, R1 and R2 are H or methyl groups and R3 is a benzene sulphonic acid ester group selected from:- <FORM:1090945/D1-D2/2> are used to dye polyamides in orange shades. Polyamides specified are polyurethane, nylon, silk, and wool, dyeing may be from a neutral bath. In Example 9 nylon tricot is dyed at pH 7.5.
