Abstract

1,090,831. Vehicles. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. Nov. 23, 1964 [Dec. 23, 1963], No. 47524/64. Heading B7H. [Also in Division E1] An earth working vehicle comprises a two wheel operational part connected by a gooseneck 18 to a two wheel tractor member 10 by a sleeve 40 engaging a guide post 38 mounted on a pivot pin 39 and a cylinder 32 incorporating a piston 34 pivoted at 36. The arrangement permits movement in a vertical direction subject to the cushioning and damping influence of pressure fluid above the piston 34 which connects by means of a line 44 having a flow restricting orifice 46 with a pair of gas springs 48 and 49 having pistons 50 and 51 above which is maintained compressed helium. The initial pressure in spring 49 is such that the piston 51 is at its lowermost position. To automatically vary the oscillation frequency, fluid may be supplied to or exhausted from the cylinder 32 under the control of a valve 60 actuated by a bell crank lever 70 in response to relative movement between the parts. In a modified system, the weight between the vehicle parts is taken by a pair of double-acting hydraulic jacks connected to a manually operated control valve and through a flow restricting orifice and isolating valve to a pair of gas springs.
