Abstract

In a process for recovering dimethyl formamide or dimethyl acetamide, used as solvent for spinning polyacrylonitrile, from an aqueous solution containing the solvent, wherein the solution is distilled in a fractionating column from which the purified solvent is withdrawn as a lower side stream while water is removed from the head, the sump liquid, comprising solvent contaminated with the corresponding carboxylic acid, cracked polyacrylonitrile and inorganic salts, is submitted to multi-stage evaporation whereby purified solvent is obtained as distillate from the first stage, and the distillate(s) from the subsequent stage(s) is (are) added to the feed to the column. In an example, the column is operated under an absolute pressure of 360 mm. Hg., and at a sump temperature of 136 DEG C. The sump liquid is submitted to a two-stage evaporation process in the form of a liquid-film under an absolute pressure of 100 mm. Hg.
