Abstract

A solid water-dispersible composition for the treatment of pine stumps to inhibit infection by Fomes annosus comprises a diluent solid material incorporated with live dehydrated spores or comminuted mycelium of the fungus Peniophora gigantea, the solid composition yielding a directly-applicable fluid composition containing viable units of said fungus after dispersion in water. The diluent solid material may be a water-insoluble material such as talc, chalk, magnesium silicate or starch. The composition may also contain movo- or disaccharide sugars (e.g. sucrose, fractose, glucose, lactose or maltose), stabilizing and binding agents (e.g. sodium carboxymethyl cellulose or sodium or potassium alginate) and a dispersing agent. The composition may be in the form of granules or tablets, or in the form of relatively fine powder in phials or capsules. The tablets may be in water-impermeable casings of plastic film (e.g. black polythene). The composition may be made up in the form of dosage units which give a count of at least of the order of 103 viable spores per ml. when dispersed in 100 mls. of aqueous suspension.ALSO:A solid water-dispersible composition for the treatment of pine stumps to inhibit infection by Fomes annosus comprises a diluent solid material incorporated with live dehydrated spores or comminuted mycelium of the fungus Peniophora gigantea, the solid composition yielding a directly-applicable fluid composition containing viable units of said fungus after dispersion in water. The diluent solid material may be a water-insoluble material such as talc, chalk, magnesium silicate or starch. The composition may also contain mono- or di-saccharide sugars (e.g. sucrose, fructose, glucose, lactose or maltose), stabilising and binding agents (e.g. sodium carboxymethyl cellulose or sodium or potassium alginate) and a dispersing agent. The composition may be in the form of granules, or tablets, or in the form of relatively fine powder in phials or capsules.
