Abstract
Ferric oxide, for range and ferrite applications, is prepared by calcining a mixture of ferrous oxide scale derived from steel milling operations and a reagent containing the SO4 radical at 1000-2000 DEG F. for at least 1/4 hour and then milling the product, the reagent being either (a) ferrous sulphate heptahydrate as crystals or as a melt formed from the crystals in a weight ratio of 1 part hydrate to 0.5-2 parts of scale, or (b) concentrated sulphuric acid (at least 90%) and water in admixture, the water being present in an amount equal to at least 10% (preferably 20%) by weight of the iron oxide scale and the sulphuric acid being present in an amount equal to from 5-100% (preferably 50%) by weight of the iron oxide scale. In an alternative procedure the hydrate reagent may be pretreated with at least 10% by weight of concentrated sulphuric acid. In a preferred embodiment using the hydrate at least 99% by weight of the scale is finer than 325 mesh, the weight-ratio of scale to heptahydrate is 1:1 and the calcination temperature 1350-1500 DEG F. The product is preferably milled so that less than 0.1% by weight of the product is held on a 325 mesh screen. Mill scales listed as being suitable for the process are Blooming Mill Scale, Rolling Mill Scale, Scarfing Scale, Finishing Mill Scale and Straight Mill Scale.
