Abstract
1,089,639. Valves. ARMATURENWERK NIEDERSCHELD G.m.b.H. Aug. 11, 1965 [Aug. 11, 1964], No. 34300/65. Heading F2V. A thermally actuated valve comprises a closure member 13 mounted on one end of a spindle 9 the other end of which enters a chamber 10. Variation in temperature sensed by a thermal element 11 causes movement of a piston 20 which, via a spring 21 and pin 22, causes movement of a piston 17 to vary the pressure in chamber 10 to thereby actuate the valve via spindle 9. A spring 12 urges the valve to the open position, and the effective volume of chamber 10 is varied by means of a piston 4 controlled by a knob 7 to thereby vary the temperature at which the valve closes. The chamber 10 may be filled with a pressure transmitting medium via screw 19. The knob may be used to actuate the valve directly by screwing piston 4 into abutting engagement with spindle 9. Springs 14 and 21 allow overtravel of spindle 9 and piston 20 respectively to avoid damage. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 (not shown), pistons 20, 17 are omitted, and a spring (8) allows axial movement of nut (6) once the valve has closed. The element (11) may be connected by capillary tubing to a further thermal element.
