Abstract

1,089,584. Cooling boxes for blast furnaces. SOCIETE METALLURGIQUE DE NORMANDIE. June 9, 1965.[June 9, 1964], No. 24401/65. Heading FAR. A cooling box (3) for a blast furnace wall 2 comprises a hollow inner body 4 on the thickness of the wall covered by a plate (11), (Fig. 4, not shown), releasably attached for cleaning or repairing purposes by cotters to an outer body flange 7 which positions the body 4 in the wall by bearing via an asbestos sheet 9 against a sheet metal surround 8, said flange 7 being held firm by wedges in slots 10 formed in pins 6 welded to the blast furnace cladding 5. Coincident with an aperture in the body 4 is an aperture (12) in the plate (11), wherewith is also integrally formed an oblique wall (13) and lateral end walls (14) which together form an upwardly directed trough to collect coolant running down from the upper part of the blast furnace surface Figs. 4-6 (not shown). Excess coolant overflows through an orifice (16) (Fig. 5) in the smaller of two compartments in the trough formed by aninternal vertical partition (15) lower than the walls (14) (Fig. 6). An aperture (17) in the walls (13) allows for ease of cleaning the trough and is closed by a removable flap (18) held in place by a wedge (19) bearing against a rod (20) seating in apertures (21) in lugs (22) integral with the wall (13).
