Abstract
1,089,469. Broaching. W. H. BIBBENS. July 19, 1965 [July 31, 1964], No. 30646/65. Headings B3B and B3L. [Also in Division F2] Apparatus for cutting a recess in a gear tooth comprises an oscillating broach. The broach holder 58, Fig. 5a, holds two broaches 50, 51 for operating on left, and right-, flanks of opposing teeth in an internally-splined clutch 23. The clutch has teeth 22 in which the recesses 25 are cut to co-operate with teeth 21 on a gear 20. The clutch is located in the chuck by toothed segments 56 and a stop 57, and is gripped by a bevel-closing collet 55. In a cutting cycle, the broach holder is moved down to cutting position by a cylinder means 86, is oscillated to cut by a crank 90, rod 89 and link 88, is raised by a crank 81 and a cam 64 and is then swung back while the clutch is indexed. The cutting position is determined by a stop 72. The work is moved to-and-from loading position by operation of screw or hydraulic means under push-button control, cutting position being determined by a stop 71.
