Abstract

<PICT:1089337/C1/1> Inorganic solids (such as sulphur, red phosphorus, kaolins, V2O5, MnO2, iron oxides, TiO2 and CdS as well as organic solids (see Division B1) may be wet-ground in the presence of dispersing agents (including higher molecular weight polyoxyalkylated carboxylic acids, alcohols, phenols, amines and mercaptans, ammonium, alkali metal and alkaline earth metal salts of carboxylic acids, sulphonic acids and sulphuric acid esters, salts of primary, secondary and tertiary amines with hydrohalic and sulphuric acids, and their quaternary ammonium compounds, and intramolecular zwitterion salts e.g. aminosulphonic acids) by passing into the closed grinding zone (8) of a mill containing grinding elements and a rotary or vibratory shaft (3) carrying agitating elements (4), so as completely to fill said zone; and passing the ground dispersion through a sieve (7) into a damping zone (9) so as completely to fill this zone also. The elimination of gas-liquid interfaces prevents entrainment of gas and foaming. The numerals refer to Fig. 2. Fig. 1 shows a similar device for upward flow of material in process: Fig. 3 shows a similar horizontal mill.
