Abstract
Mono-, di-, and hydroxy carboxylic acids are prepared by oxidizing a compound RO(-X-O)n-CR1R2.CH(Y)OH (where R is a hydrocarbon or hydroxy-hydrocarbon radical, X is a 1,2-alkylene group, R1 and R2 are hydrogen or alkyl groups, Y is hydrogen or a methyl group, n may be an integer including zero, and (-X-O)n may include different 1,2-alkylene groups), in an aqueous medium in the presence of nickel peroxide. Mono, -di, and hydroxy acids of formulae RO(-X-O)n-CH1R2COOH, HOOC.R3R4C-O(-X-O)n-CR1R2.COOH and <FORM:1089134/C2/1> (where R3 and R4 are hydrogen or alkyl groups), are obtained and the nickel oxide may be preformed, e.g. by the alkaline oxidation of divalent nickel oxide or hydroxide, or generated in situ by adding a nickel salt to the reaction mixture in the presence of an oxidizing agent. Examples describe the oxidation of diethylene glycol mono-ethyl ether to yield 2-ethoxy-ethoxyacetic acid, diethylene glycol to yield diglycolic acid, triethylene glycol to yield ethylene diglycollic acid, and the oxidation of tetra-, and poly-ethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol to form mixtures of diacids and hydroxy-acids. Other glycols and glycol mono-ethers are also mentioned.
