Abstract

1,088,697. Joint-making packing. A.P.V. CO. Ltd. Aug. 25, 1966 [Sept. 27, 1965], No. 41076/65. Heading F2B. A gasket 4 comprises a core 9 of elastomeric material sheathed in a length of flexible thinwalled tubing 10 of corrosion-resistant material having its ends sealed together to form a gasket of closed loop formation. The core may be of nitrile rubber, silicone rubber or a resincured butyl rubber and the tubing may be of fluorinated ethylene propylene resins, polyvinylchloride, polyethylene, polypropylene or nylon. The ends of the tubing may be internally joined by induction heating a band of copper foil (11, Fig. 3) surrounding the core, the interior of the tubing preferably being filled with an inert gas such as nitrogen or argon. An additional heating process may be used to join the outer surfaces of the tubing ends. As shown applied to a heat exchanger plate 1, the gasket 4 is housed in a recess in the plate and isolates ports 6 and 8 from the flow space including inlet and outlet ports 5 and 7 and may be retained in position by a wrapping 14 of corrosion resistant material surrounding the gasket and having tags 15 which are bent over the edge of the plate 1 as at 16.
