Mono-azo basic dyes of general formula <FORM:1088611/C4-C5/1> in which each of the radicals R1 represents an alkyl radical which may be different from or identical with each other and may be substituted or in which two or three of the radicals R1 together with the quaternated nitrogen atom, or in which one of the radicals R1 together with Y, R7, the N atom bound to R7 and the quaternated N atom form a saturated or unsaturated heterocyclic ring system and in which R7 is an alkyl radical, R9 is chlorine or bromine, R11 is a -CO- alkyl, alkylsulphonyl, mono or di-alkylaminosulphonyl radical, one of R12 and R13 is chlorine or bromine the other is hydrogen, R18 is hydrogen, chlorine or bromine or an alkyl radical, Y is a substituted or unsubstituted alkylene radical, and X(-) is an anion, are prepared by coupling one mole of a diazo compound of an amine of formula <FORM:1088611/C4-C5/2> with one mole of a compound of formula <FORM:1088611/C4-C5/3> or by alkylation of a compound of formula <FORM:1088611/C4-C5/4> or by reaction of a compound of formula <FORM:1088611/C4-C5/5> in which E is the radical of an acid anion with an amine of formula <FORM:1088611/C4-C5/6> The dyes give orange shades in polyaerylonitrile materials
