Abstract

1,088,510. Removing material by laser beams. H. WESTMEYER. May 20, 1966, No. 22654/66. Heading B3V. [Also in Division B4] In the cutting or drilling of material 1 by means of a laser beam 3, there is applied to the opposite side of the material a substance 4 having a vaporization temperature less than the melting temperature of the material. The vapour pressure thus produced during operation of the laser keeps the cut or hole clear of molten material. The substance 4 may be water, paraffin, mineral or vegetable oil, glycerine, xylal, or cedar wood oil. It is supported by a backing 2 which may have good or poor heat conductivity to influence the cutting or drilling effect.
