Abstract
1,088,204. Mats; rugs; upholstery covers. W. N. VICKERSTAFF. Feb. 24, 1965 [March 5, 1964], No. 9299/64. Headings A4A, A4M and A4S. [Also in Divisions B5 and D1] A mat, rug or cover for floors, walls or articles of furniture comprises a flattened length of tubular knitted fabric closed at the ends by lines of stitching 16, a part 14 of the outer surface having a pile and a part 15 being plain. A pad of felt or foamed plastics may be inserted in the tube and located by additional lines of stitching or by passing the stitches 16 through the pad. The tube is knitted on a circular knitting machine having dial points over half the periphery of the needle cylinder and forming a pile yarn into loops, and latch needles which draw the loops into the base fabric knitted by the latch needles. The closing stitches 16 may be formed loosely during the knitting of the fabric and drawn tight when the mat is formed. In modifications the closing stitching is reinforced by a binding tape or replaced by lines, or broken lines, of adhesive longitudinally of the tube. In stair carpets, pads, in pockets formed by stitching, are spaced to rest on the stair treads, or padded individual stair step covers have an upstanding edge part unpiled on both surfaces and forming a flange protecting the riser. Small rectangular or other shapes may be used to cover an entire floor.
