Abstract

A coating which may be applied to fibrous materials to soften them and reduce their friction comprises: (a) a compound of formula [(CH3)2NR2R3]Cl, in which R2 and R3 are C12-C18 hydrocarbon, (b) a poly-(dimethylsiloxane) of 69,000-71,000 molecular weight and (c) a compound of formula [R5NHCOCH2NR6R7R8]Cl in which R5 is C16-C18 hydrocarbon, R6 is hydroxy alkoxy substituted hydrocarbon and R7 and R8 are hydroxy-hydrocarbon. R2 and and R3 may be linear or branched C12,C14, C16,C18 saturated or C18 unsaturated. (b) May be trimethyl siloxy ended. R5 may be linear, e.g. a 1:1 mixture of hexadecyl and octadecyl, R6 may be 2-hydroxy di-, tri- or tetraethoxyl ethyl and R7 and R8 may be 2-hydroxyethyl. The ingredients may be dissolved in water to give a solution containing 8-10% (a) 2-5% (b) and 1-2% (c). The composition may be applied to corrugated boar, fibre board or paper to the extent of 0.5-1.5 lbs./1000 sq. ft. of surface.ALSO:Compositions suitable for imparting anti-scuff properties to fibrous substrates comprise (a) a compound of formula: [R1R2R3R4N] Cl in which R1 and R4 are methyl and R2 and R3 are linear or branched C12-18 hydrocarbon radicals, (b) a dimethyl polysiloxane of M.W. 69,000 - 71,000 and (c) a compound of formula: [R6R7R8NCH2CONHR5] Cl where R5 is a C16-18 hydrocarbon group, R6 is a hydroxy or alkoxy substituted hydrocarbon group and R7 and R8 are hydroxy substituted hydrocarbon groups. 0.5 - 1.5 pounds of composition may be applied per 1000 sq. ft. of substrate. The substrate, sized or unsized may be coated by rolling, curtain coating, reverse roll coating, or spraying. Substrates specified are corrugated board, liner board, paper, cardboard and other cellulosic materials as well as textile fibres. The products are used for packaging.
