Abstract

1,088,087. Wrenches. PENDLETON TOOL INDUSTRIES Inc. March 10, 1965 [March 20, 1964], No. 10258/65. Heading B4W. A ratchet wrench comprises a head 11 having a cylindrical opening provided with a series of peripheral teeth 14, a driven body 20 rotatable within the head and having a shank 21 providing a work engaging member the body 20 being held in position by a snap ring 23 which fits in a groove (24) in the body and engages the underside of the head, the ring 23 co-operating with a radial bearing 22 at the other end of the body. A pair of double-ended pawls 26 are slidably disposed in parallel slots 25 in the body 20 on opposite sides of the axis of rotation, the pawls being formed with teeth 27 which co-operate with the teeth 14 on the head and are slidable between two operative, terminal positions. The pawls are held in either position by detent means comprising a helical coil spring 30 mounted in a transverse bore in the central portion of the body and having at each end a ball 32 which is urged into one of two angular notches 34 in the pawl. A pawl actuator disc 40 is drivingly interconnected to the pawls by two pins 41 on the actuator which fit into centrally located slots 42 in the pawls. The actuator is manually turned to cause the pins 41 to shift the pawls longitudinally in their slots. Locking means for holding the body 20 and actuator 40 against relative axial displacement comprise a pair of outwardly projecting diametrically disposed lugs 50 on the actuator plate which fit into a groove 52 in the wall of the central recess in the body 20 and which through the normal range of travel of the actuator are effective to hold the parts in assembly. The groove 52 is intersected by the slots 25 so that after removal of the body 20 and actuator 40 from the head 11 it is possible to free the actuator for axial movement relative to the body by further rotation of the actuator plate.
