Abstract
Alkyl-aryl sulphonic acids and salts of formula <FORM:1087889/C2/1> in which n is an integer exceeding 9, R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl radical and X is hydrogen or the group <FORM:1087889/C2/2> in which R11 is hydrogen or an alkyl radical, and X1 is an element of Group II or IV of the Periodic System, such as calcium, barium, zinc or tin, by contacting the impure acid containing excess sulphonating agent consisting of sulphuric acid or oleum, in the presence of an organic solvent inert to the sulphonating agent, with an anion-exchange resin until substantially all of the sulphonating agent is removed from the product by the resin, and regenerating the exhausted resin by washing it with deionized water until the effluent is substantially non-acidic. Suitable solvents are, for example, dichloroethane or heptane. Preferably the excess sulphonating agent is separated in three steps: (a) the sulphonation mixture is decanted at 20-80 DEG C. so that most of the excess sulphonating agent separates as a heavy layer; (b) the partly purified mixture is diluted with an inert solvent as defined above and the resulting mixture is allowed to stand after which a further portion of the excess sulphonating agent can be separated by decantation; and (c) the remaining mixture is treated with the ion-exchange resin.
