Abstract
1,087,843. Sharpening industrial knives. J. WICKSTEAD, and W. B. HINDLEY. May 19, 1964 [May 18, 1963], No. 19843/63. Heading B3D. A portable grinding unit for an industrial blade or knife, preferably while mounted in a stock or holder, comprises a body part in shape resembling a joiner's moulding plane with hand grips at each end, power driven grinding means mounted on said body part, adjustable guide means of effective length on said body part engageable with the back face of the blade to orient and guide the body part relative to the plane of the blade and further guide means on said body part of effective length engageable with the blade or holder to determine the height of an intended path of movement for the body part relative to the cutting edge of the blade and means for adjusting the grinding means into operative contact with the edge of the blade to determine its depth of sharpening cut relative to said intended path. The unit is intended for sharpening blades or knives used in carpet looms, paper-printing, paper-making, food preparation and textile industries. The body part 10 is of angle cross-section. Rear manipulating handle 11 and front hand knob 12 are secured to the flat top. On the front wall is an inclined face carrying a slide on which is mounted an electric motor 13 with grinding wheel 14, the slide being adjustable by a feed screw operated by a thumb wheel 15. An air motor can be used instead of an electric motor. A pair of sleeves 17 rotatably mounted in the front wall each have a head 18 on the inside and a thumb wheel 19 on the outside. The sleeves are internally screw-threaded to receive screwed rods 21 to the inner ends of which is fixed a fence 22, the front face of which engages the rear face of the blade B and the lower edge of which engages the top of the blade stock S. The fence is laterally adjusted by rotating the sleeves 17 which are then secured by set-screws 20. Lock-nuts 20a are provided on the outer ends of the screwed rods 21. The upper edge of the fence 22 is notched at 22a in the region of the grinding wheel. A pair of small fences 23 are secured to the fence 22 at each end of the notch to overhang on the other side of the blade and are provided with adjustable screws 24 the ends of which engage the front face of the blade. All the fences of such length that the grinding means may be taken beyond the limits of the cutting edge of the blade. The faces are made to suit one particular size and shape of blade and its stick or holder, and are interchangeable with others. Where there is no stock the device could be supported on the blade edge and guided by a face of the blade. Alternatively a temporary stock may be clamped to the blade. The blade may be ground in its own stock or dismounted therefrom and mounted in a grinding stock.
