The inlet or outlet of a furnace for the heat treatment of metal strip is sealed by a housing surrounding the opening and a pair of seal rolls 20, 22 engaging the metal strip W and mounted in the side plates 12 of the housing so that one roll can be moved away from or towards the strip W, sealing means between the ends of the rolls and the housing and sealing plates 66 to seal the roll peripheries to the housing being provided. Each roll 20, 22 has an outer covering 28 of heat resistant resilient material and is mounted in bearings secured to crank arms 44, 46 so that the roller shafts project through arcuate slots in the side-plates 12 of the housing. The cranks 44, 46 are pivoted to the side plates 12 and operated by fluid cylinders 52. Toothed sectors 54, 56 enable the rolls 20, 22 to be operated by a single cylinder. Torsion bars 50, 64 preserve the rolls in a parallel position, the thinner bar 64 enabling greater pressure to be put on one end of the rolls to correct any deviation of the strip from its proper track. Nut and bolt operated slides 186, 187 close the furnace above the rolls to enable adjustments and repairs to be made without loss of furnace atmosphere. Sealing plates 66 secured to housing members 14 are faced with felt. In another embodiment, the cranks carrying the rolls are connected together so that the rolls are moved together by a single cylinder at each end. In a furnace through which the strip follows a horizontal path, only the upper roll moves, and a single slide seals the furnace to allow for repairs to the rolls. The hydraulic system for operating the rolls includes throttle valves in the inlet lines to control the speed of operation and regulators to adjust the pressure applied at each end of the rolls. The throttle valves and regulators are by-passed by one-way valves so that the speed of operation can be separately adjusted for retracting the rolls and for applying them to the strip.
