Abstract

Silicone elastomer vulcanizates with a high resistance to ageing are prepared by working into the rubber before vulcanization, a silica which has been rendered bydrophobic by treatment with organic silicon halogen compounds; the resultant silica has a specific surface (BET) from 50 to 300 m.2 per g. and a silanol group concentration of 0.1 to 1.0 OH per 100<\>rA2. It may have a carbon content of 1 to 3% by weight. Dimethyl dichlorosilane is a suitable organic silicon halogen compound. In the examples 35 parts of silica are used in a commercial silicone rubber and the products cured using dicumyl peroxide.
